Gresten is clearly home of the
very first known Zellhofer's, and quite probably the surname originated
near Gresten, perhaps at a homestead named Zellhof. The very earliest information at hand
(and deduced!) takes us back into the
early 1500's. In those early days, they generally resided on farms
which were largely owned or dominated by their baron landlords. As
yet we have not researched actual land ownership there, so this
may be somewhat incorrect, but even if a man "owned" his land, he was
heavily obligated to a ruling land baron within whose domain that land
was located. |

This is a "new" picture postcard of the St Michael's
Lutheran/Evangelishe church in Gresten, built in 1482 and still in use after
over 5 centuries! This real treasure was received from Mani & Gini
Hertlein while they were visiting others from the Dietenhofen area of
Bavaria. Thomas Zellhofer was pastor of this church about 1635-1650, and
his family was among those exulanten to Bavaria by 1671. |
