Urphertshofen (OR Urphershofen) was the
home of "Anne", said in her obituary to be the wife on John Michael
"Mike"Zellhoefer of Brachbach bei Obernzenn. Anne's birth surname and
"true" birthplace remain unknown.
Anne's obituary stated Urphershofen (no
"t"), which is a tiny hamlet 2km ENE of Steinsfeld, where the church
was/is. But the obituary comes from "der Christliche Botschafter" in
far-away Wisconsin, which would have known only whatever they were told by ???.
Mike and his ancestors attended church in Obernzenn, which is 17 km from
Steinsfeld. Urphertshofen (w/"t") is about 2km SSW of
Obernzenn. Because of Urphertshofen being mostly likely, I searched hard there,
and Mani Hertlein went again to Obernzenn and searched for some Anna from
Urphertshofen born about 1823. Well, no Anna was found that seems to fit,
but now we have on this webpage some of the pictures of Urphertshofen gathered
during that search.
"Mike" was "single" and living with his married sister
(Margareta Barbara Walz) in Oberaltenbernheim (over 20 km from Urphershofen
b.Steinsfeld) when he received his "Permission to Leave" on 21 March 1853,
traveled to Hamberg, boarded the ship Celle, and landed in New York less than 3
months later on 13 June 1853. The debarkation record does not appear to show
Mike and Anna together on that ship Celle, but we have only a transcript and have not
been able to obtain a copy of the actual list.
Mike & Anne began their family with son Fredrick born probably early
1854. We still seek where they were married and from that to learn Anna's
birthname. Noo marriage record is found in Mike's church in Obernzenn, nor in Wisconsin
(in early Wisconsin such things were not necessarily recorded!). So we don't
(yet) know when/where they were married. If somehow it was somewhere on that
very long trip across Germany, the Atlantic Ocean and then across several states to
Wisconsin, but now that's another needle in a haystack!
So obviously Urphershofen bei Steinsfeld will
be searched now. The real story of how this marriage came about would be most
interesting!
