| For starters, Johan Leonhart Zellhoefer was usually
called "Leonhart" In 1843/1844 he emigrated to the USA
from Kreis Ansbach, Bavaria with his brother Fred. Leonhart went
on to Wisconsin alone, settling in Rome, Sullivan Township, Jefferson
County, Wisconsin. |
| In 1846 the several remaining Zellhoefer family members
also emigrated, bring with them two women who became the brides of
Leonhart and his brother George in a double ceremony in Rome Wisconsin
on September 1, 1846.
A cholera epidemic was raging in Jefferson County at that time.
George's wife shortly succumbed to the plague, and apparently Leonhart's
wife followed suit.
In 1848 Leonhart took another bride, marrying Christina
Pfeifer. Christina appears to have emigrated from the same area of
Bavaria, as the marriage took place in Milwaukee, where it seems likely
Leonhart went to pick her up for the last leg of her journey to
Rome. Perhaps we'll learn more about that along the way. |
| Leonhart had patented land in Sullivan Township and begun
farming. There Leonhart and Christina had a family of 10 children,
and remained for the remainder of fairly long lives. |
